Lovely Memphis has a question

While looking at houses throughout Memphis, I couldn't tell the difference between what a "modern" style house is and a "ranch" style house. For all those who are more schooled in this difference (which is likely everyone reading this) than I am, do you have any input on what marks the distinction between the two?
